My heart thumped from anxiety and my eyes turned in a cursory survey of the environment as our vehicle came to a halt for security checks at the Daura residence of President-elect Muhammadu Buhari. The fresh white coat of paint on some two hundred metre-long fence gave an inkling of an uncommon excitement in the atmosphere.  Close to the assorted security operatives at the security post was a motley crowd of peasants. President John Mahama has urged WAEC to put its house in order, describing as disappointing the reported leakage of examination papers in the ongoing Senior High School Certificate Examination(WASSCE). He’s directed the Bureau of National(BNI) to collaborate with the examining body to bring culprits to book in the scandal. WAEC following last year’s leakage in similar exams claimed to have advanced a software into the system that will check cheating in exams this year, but the mechanism deployed yielded no fruits as three papers have already been leaked in the ongoing WASSCE raising concerns about WAEC’s integrity in the conduct of examinations. Just under one month ago James (his name has been changed to protect him and his family) began a Facebook friendship with me.  After a week of chatting about Nigeria, Israel, and Judaism, he opened up about his real identity and his location.  James told me that he is really in Libya, with his wife and newborn son. Setting yourself on fire is never a smart idea. Ever. Not only does this seldom get you what you want, but often times it gets you severe burns, maybe even skin grafts, and a lot of unusable clothing. It is also a good way to make yourself not liked, since most people don’t like hanging out with people who set themselves on fire. However, given that Merkel and the BBC see these “refugees” as the future “doctors and scientists” of  Europe, perhaps they know something which we do not.
