CHIEF JUSTICE CANNOT BE INDEPENDENT- Ghana Law school president
In a UTV discussion on nepotism and cronyism in the 1 year old government of President Akufo-Addo, Sammy Gyamfi, SRC President of Ghana School of Law has disclosed that the President appointed his first cousin as the Chief Justice. He said the Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, who hails from Akropong with the President may not discharge her work independently.
He condemned the action as a danger to public accountability. He went further to list the number close relations of the President who have been appointed to key government positions. He cited the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta, who he said is also a cousin of the President.
He said the practice must be condemned by all well meaning Ghanaians. According to him, with the President's relatives holding key positions in government and the judiciary, when an issue of accountability comes up, the matter will be swept under the carpet. He said a public accountability matter will be dealt with in a family way instead of through the traditional criminal justice system.
The Chief Spokesperson for students of Ghana School of Law expressed worry that President Akufo-Addo could not limit his nepotism and cronyism to the executive arm of government but added the judiciary.
